UPDATE - FATAL MOTOR VEHICLE – HIGHWAY 69

(Sudbury, ON) - On January 7, 2009 at 10:30 p.m., officers from the Sudbury OPP detachment responded to a two vehicle collision on Highway 69, City of Greater Sudbury (Richard Lake hill).

At this location there are two northbound lanes and two southbound lanes of travel. Due to weather conditions, only one lane in each direction was clear. Investigation revealed that a northbound vehicle entered the southbound lane to pass a snowplow and collided head-on with a southbound pick-up truck at the crest of the hill.

The driver/lone occupant of the northbound vehicle, Anthony Henry GATTO, age 64 of Sudbury and the driver/lone occupant of the pick-up truck, Misty Lee JEANVEAU, age 23 of Burwash Township (Estaire, ON) were pronounced dead at the scene.

Alcohol was not involved in the collision. Post mortems are scheduled. The investigation is continuing.

The highway was closed for 7 ½ hours while officers conducted the on-scene investigation with the assistance of two O.P.P. Technical Traffic Collision Investigators. At which time, traffic was re-routed through Highway 537 and Highway 17 by-pass.

DRIVER CHARGED WITH SEVERAL OFFENCES

(Thessalon First Nation, Ontario) – On January 7, 2008 shortly after 10:00 p.m. a member of the East Algoma – Thessalon OPP attempted to stop a motor vehicle on Biish Road, Thessalon First Nation, Ontario. The motor vehicle turned into a driveway and the driver fled behind a house.

Subsequently the driver, Joseph Noel WABIGWAN (48) of Thessalon First Nation has been charged under the Criminal Code of Canada with:

Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Section 253(1) (a)
Over 80 mgs, Section 253(1) (b)
Flight from Police, Section 249.1(1)

WABIGWAN has also been charged under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario with “Driving while under Suspension”

WABIGWAN was released on a Promise to Appear in Thessalon Court on February 19, 2009.

OPP MAKE ARREST IN 1970 ABDUCTION OF 12 YEAR OLD GIRL

(Kirkland Lake, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has made an arrest in the ongoing investigation into the October 20, 1970 disappearance of 12 year old Katherine May WILSON from Kirkland Lake, Ontario. She was last seen walking home on Harvey Kirkland Road on the outskirts of Kirkland Lake and had not been seen or heard from since.

As a result of the investigation, Barry Vincent MANION , age 60, of London, Ontario is charged with First Degree Murder and Abduction of a person under the age of fourteen years.

He is scheduled to appear in Haileybury Court on Friday, January 9, 2009.

The investigation by the OPP is continuing, under the direction of Detective Inspector Ken Leppert of the Criminal Investigation Branch, Orillia.

“I am proud of the dedication and the relentless pursuit of justice by the members of the OPP and appreciative of the assistance that the family of this young girl and the public played in this investigation,” said Commissioner Julian Fantino.
