Boating Fatality (Lake Manitou, Manitoulin Island, Ont.) – On Wednesday 12 July 2006 at around 8:00 pm Manitoulin OPP were advised of a serious boating collision, which occurred near Newby’s Bay on Lake Manitou 20 kms southwest of Little Current.

(Lake Manitou, Manitoulin Island, Ont.) – On Wednesday 12 July 2006 at around 8:00 pm Manitoulin OPP were advised of a serious boating collision, which occurred near Newby’s Bay on Lake Manitou 20 kms southwest of Little Current.

Preliminary investigation reveals that a vessel under power struck a second vessel on Lake Manitou resulting in a 17 year-old female youth from Sudbury receiving fatal injuries. Names are not being released at this time. Officers are presently on scene continuing the investigation. A post mortem examination will be taking place in Sudbury today. Manitoulin OPP Detachment with the assistance of the OPP Northeast region traffic and marine unit and the OPP Forensic Identification Unit are investigating.

Be Warned—More Radar On Goulais Mission Rd

Goulais River, Ont.,

Be careful traveling on Goulais Mission Road and Highway 552 West in Goulais River. OPP in Sault Ste Marie have been asked to increase our radar patrols on those roads. Several resident’s who live in that area have complained to police of an apparent increase in people traveling in excess of the speed limit.

Sault Ste Marie OPP will increase the radar presence in that area in an attempt to educate road users that there are children, and children at heart, that live and play near the roadway every day.

Be patient and remember that speed and erratic driving may just take the life of a child or parent who lives, works and plays near that stretch of roadway.

Male Assaulted In Park

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) On July 12th, 2006 police attended a residence on Hillside Drive North to investigate a possible assault.

Police learned that the victim was sitting at a park across from his residence when the suspect allegedly assaulted him. The victim was threatened, assaulted with a set of vice grips and his glasses were grabbed by the suspect and broken.

The victim suffered some minor injuries, bruises and abrasions.

Mischief & Break & Enter In Thessalon

On Wednesday July 12, 2006 at approximately 8:15 am a mischief was reported to the East Algoma – Thessalon OPP. Overnight suspects removed flowers from pots on the Main Street of Thessalon.

Later that morning at approximately 10:30 am officers were advised of a break and enter to a shed located at the rear of the Thessalon Community Hall. The break and enter also occurred overnight.

Suspects stole an aluminum push broom and an electric “Bush Hog” edge trimmer.

Charged with Assault With A Weapon, Utter Threat to Cause Death or Bodily Harm X2, Mischief Under $5,000 is Walter George BLIGHT (63) of Elliot Lake.

BLIGHT is scheduled to appear at a Bail Hearing on July 13, 2006.
