Civic Long Weekend Think Safety First

The Sault Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police are asking all members of the public who will be on our road and waterways this long weekend to think safety first. You can become a positive influence in the saving your own life and that of others. This year the North East Region has experienced a number of fatal motor vehicle crashes and marine related drowning deaths, almost all of which were preventable. Persons who have wandered into oncoming traffic have not only killed themselves but other innocent persons on the roads. If you are fatigued take a break, do not talk on a phone or become otherwise distracted when driving. If I could offer you a tip that would give you a 98% chance to win the lottery would you take me up on it? How about saving your life or preventing injury? Guess what, wearing a seat belt and a life jacket will increase your odds of survival or minimise injury should you become involved in an vehicle or boating incident.

The OPP across the Province will be doing their part this weekend by patrolling our highways and waterways. Officers will be aggressively enforcing the traffic act violations that are leading to the deaths and injuries on our waterways, Failure to wear a seatbelt or flotation device, aggressive driving (speeding , unsafe passing etc) , drinking and driving and the recent trend in many of our fatal collisions failure to drive in your lane. Please do your part and take your time, be safe and have a wonderful weekend.
