INVESTIGATION CONTINUES INTO FATAL MOTOR COLLISION INVOLVING OFF DUTY OPP OFFICER

(Nairn Centre,ON) - At 3:00 pm on Sunday June 29, 2008, Espanola Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a two vehicle collision on Hwy 17 Nairn Township approximately 3 kilometers west of Nairn Centre.

The driver of the motorcycle Detective Sergeant Paul Clairmont received fatal injuries. Detective Sergeant Clairmont was off duty and operating his personal motorcycle eastbound on Hwy 17 when it came into collision with a westbound Pontiac Sunfire.

The investigation is continuing and the police are asking for the public’s assistance with this investigation. If anyone happened to witness the collision or observed the vehicles prior to the collision they are asked to come forward and contact police. They are asked to call the Espanola Detachment at 1-888-310-1122.

The investigation into the collision is being conducted by officers of the Espanola and Sudbury OPP with the assistance of the OPP Northeast Regional Forensic Unit and a Technical Traffic Collision Investigator and Re-constructionist.

Caught in the Act

A home owner at Hwy#17 North Ryan Twp. Was surprised Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. 02 July 08 when he discovered a man attempting to break into his house. The owner chased the suspect down the beach. Sault Ste Marie OPP officers captured the suspect a short time later near the Poplar Grove Motel. Charged with 2 counts of break enter, one for the attempt to break into the house and the second charge for a break and enter into a nearby camper trailer, is Bernard Arthur HUGHES age 47 of 102 Government Rd Keewatin On. Nothing was taken in the break and enters.
