Accident on Highway 17 Leads to Charges

On the 28th of February 2007 at approximately 10:30 P.M. officers from the Sault Ste. Marie detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a report of a single motor vehicle accident on Highway 17 in the community of Garden River. Their subsequent investigation revealed that the driver of a pick-up truck and trailer had lost his load of household effects while traveling eastbound on Highway 17. Further investigation revealed that the driver had been consuming alcohol and was subsequently arrested.

A 39 year old Sault Ste Marie man has been charged with driving a motor vehicle having over the legal limit of .08 milligrams of alcohol. He has also been charged under the Highway Traffic Act with Failing to Secure a Load. He has been released from custody and will appear in court at a later date.

Though there were no injuries as a result of this incident the potential for serious injury or death was obvious. The items being hauled that were dumped on the highway were heavy household appliances that ended up being strewn on the roadway and shoulder. Impaired driving continues to be a problem and continues to be a leading cause of motor vehicle collisions. It is illegal, it puts innocent people at risk and is just a stupid thing to do!!!!!
