ATM Caution!

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) The East Algoma OPP is currently investigating incidents of bankcard skimmers at some of the local ATMs.

Incidents are reported to have taken place sometime since the 5th of March 2005 Investigation has shown that customers accounts have been compromised and fraudulent transactions were then used to withdraw money from customers accounts.

Police are cautioning ATM users to report any incidents of suspicious activities or attachment in or around ATM machines. People should take precaution to cover the keypad when entering their pin number.

Anyone with information is asked to contact their local financial institution or the police at 1-888-310-1122.

Investigation continuing.

House destroyed by Fire

Goulais River, Ont., a Goulais River home was destroyed and the family cat lost its life after a fire in the house on Friendly Lane in Goulais River yesterday morning.

At about 10:15 a.m. yesterday a neighbour in the area noticed smoke coming out of the bottom of the chimney and around the eaves of the home. Goulais River Fire and Rescue and the OPP were called to the scene. Immediately after calling the emergency agencies, the witness indicates that the house was engulfed in flames.

The house and the contents were destroyed in the flames. Investigation indicates that the fire may have started in or around the fireplace. No one was injured in the fire and the occupants of the home were not at home.

Logging Accident Sends One To Hospital

Montreal River, Ont. One man was taken to Sault and Area Hospital by ambulance after a logging accident in the Montreal River area yesterday afternoon.

At about 1:15 p.m. yesterday two men were cutting and topping trees on Mile 67 Road about 30 kms off of Hwy 17 in the Montreal River area. One man cut a tall tree and when the tree fell it struck a smaller tree in the same area. The entire top of the smaller tree snapped off and struck the second worker.

The second worker was transported out of the bush to Hwy 17 by private vehicle and an ambulance was called. The victim was transported to Sault and Area Hospital with possible back and internal injuries. The victim has been identified as thirty one year old Russell Newton of Thessalon.

The Ministry of Labour was notified and continuing the investigation into the accident.
