EASTER LONG WEEKEND INITIATIVE

(Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) Long weekends can be exciting times for family and friends to get together. But, get-togethers with family and friends can turn into tragedies when people are killed or injured in traffic collisions.

Motorists need to be mindful of actions that will make their travel safer. Drivers can protect themselves and their passengers by following these travel rules:

1) Before you start your trip, make sure your vehicle is tuned up and in good shape for travel.

2) Restrain yourself and your passengers properly in seat belts and car safety seats.

3) Be flexible in setting your travel plans. Leave early to avoid the peak traffic hours.

4) Stay fresh and alert when driving. Forty-one percent of fatal traffic collisions are single vehicle collisions. These collisions most often occur during the late night/early morning hours and the late afternoon hours to drivers who are tired, have consumed alcohol, or both.

5) Keep your speed down. Give yourself plenty of time and distance to react to the traffic around you.

6) Do not pass if you cannot see enough clear road to pass safely.

7) If there will be drinking at your get-together, choose a designated driver who will remain alcohol free.

8) Because driving requires your full attention, pull off the road if you have to use your cell phone.

9) Watch for wildlife on roadways where animals are typically looking for road salt in ditches.

Officers from the Sault Ste. Marie detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police will be out in full force this Easter Long weekend on Highway 17 and surrounding roadways. Officers will be focusing on aggressive driving habits, impaired drivers and seatbelt compliance.

Good, safe and responsible driving is an obligation for everyone on the road.

STAY ALERT! STAY ALIVE!
