SUSPICIOUS FIRE SENDS MAN TO HOSPITAL

(ESPANOLA, ON)The Espanola Police Service along with the Ontario Provincial Police are continuing their investigation into details surrounding a suspicious fire that sent one man to hospital. He has now been released from hospital recovering from non-life threatening injuries.

On Monday March 19 2012 just after 1:00 AM Espanola Police Service responded to a commercial building fire situated in a building complex on Tudhope Street in the Town of Espanola. Police arrived on the scene to find the flames from the building quickly spreading to adjoining businesses. The Espanola Volunteer Fire Department along with the assistance of the Baldwin Volunteer Fire Department attended the scene to extinguish the fire.

A 44 year old male was located near the scene with non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the Espanola Hospital for treatment. The scene has been turned over to investigators from the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshall who are closely examining the scene and collecting evidence. Members of The Ontario Technical Safety Standards Association are assisting along with officers of the Ontario Provincial Police Forensic Identification Services Unit.

It is unknown the estimated cost of damages to the building and surrounding businesses until the investigation is complete. The area is still cordoned off as it is a public safety concern as the Fire Marshall determines the exact structural damage.  The public is being kept away as a precaution should part of the building collapse. Police are aware that this has caused a disruption to businesses in the immediate vicinity.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Northeast Region Crime Unit and the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) under the direction of Detective Inspector Colleen McCormick of CIB are assisting with the investigation at the request of the Espanola Police Service

SEVERAL BUSINESSES VICTIM OF THEFT

(Elliot Lake, Ontario) –Sunday, March the 18th, 2012 at approximately 3:52 a.m. an officer of the East Algoma OPP, while on general patrol noticed several windows broken to businesses within the Hillside Plaza in Elliot Lake.

Four windows were noted to be broken with an approximate value of $1900.00. 

While investigating the above mischief, officers received a call to attend the local LCBO in regards to an alarm.  On scene, police noted another window was broken and entry had been gained to the business.

Information was received regarding a possible suspect and at 4:35 a.m., while on general patrol the suspect was located and arrested.

Later, at 9:30 a.m. police received a call regarding another broken window at the Collins Wall on Hillside Drive North.  Estimated value of $500.00.

Charged with the following is Alexandre Jean-Pierre ETHIER (18) of no fixed address.

  • Mischief under $5,000 – (x5)
  • Break and Enter
  • Fail to comply with undertaking
  • Breach of Probation

The accused remains in custody awaiting a Bail hearing in Sault Ste Marie.

CLOTHES STOLEN FROM LAUNDRY FACILITY

(Elliot Lake, Ontario) – Police are currently investigating the theft of clothes.

The victim reports that at approximately 6:00 p.m. on March 18th, 2012 she attended the laundry room at 26 Willoughby Road and commenced her laundry.  A while later, she returned but could not locate a basket full of clothes and some items in a dryer.

Investigation reveals that unknown person(s) removed the basket and clothes from the locked laundry room.
