Greater Sudbury Police are reporting that Tyler Closs, wanted on a Canada-wide warrant, was captured in the city thanks to a community member who called police.

On Aug. 6, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (ROPE) Squad reported a Canada-wide Arrest Warrant for 26-year-old Tyler Closs.

Closs was wanted for breaching his statutory release while serving a four-year, six-month sentence for two counts each of aggravated assault and assaulting peace officer with a weapon or intimidation, as well as obstructing police and simple assault.

Closs is known to visit Greater Sudbury, and just after 9:35 p.m. on Aug. 8,  a community member contacted the GSPS as they believed that Tyler Closs was present at an establishment on Lasalle Boulevard, according to a media release from police.

“Officers from our Emergency Response Unit and Patrol Operations quickly arrived on scene, confirmed the individual was Tyler Closs and immediately took him into custody,” the release continued.

“We would like to thank our community for the ongoing dedication and commitment to community safety and well-being and we would like to thank those who contacted police with information related to the whereabouts of this dangerous offender.”

Closs is well-known to Sudbury police.

In 2016, a then 18-year-old Closs was wanted for a domestic-related assault, uttering threats, mischief under $5,000, breach of recognizance, breach of probation under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, withdrawal of surety and failing to appear in court.

Then, in 2022, Closs was arrested in connection with a robbery on Mountain Street in Sudbury and charged with Robbery, as well as weapons and possession charges.

After his arrest, Closs was transferred into the custody of the Sudbury District Jail without incident, said police.
