MISCHIEF AT CHAPLEAU PASTOR’S RESIDENCE

(Chapleau) On August 16,2009 at approximately 3:36 am The OPP responded to a report of person(s) unknown throwing a brick through the living room window of Pastor Dan Lee’s residence at 26 Pine Street in Chapleau. At the time of this incident there were two guests sleeping near the window and barely escaped injury as the brick and broken glass landed within two feet of the two people. The OPP is asking the public’s assistance in solving this serious incident. If anyone has any information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of the individual(s) involved they are requested to call The OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS ( 8477 ).

BOATING ACCIDENT RESULTS IN INJURIES

(Chapleau) On August 22, 2009 at 2:48 am The OPP were advised of a boating accident on Bertrand Lake in Bliss Township approximately 20 kilometres north west of Chapleau. A male operating a 14 foot aluminum boat powered by a 15 horsepower outboard struck a tree at a small island on the lake while enroute to his camp on the mainland. The male, Laurie MacDONALD age 61 of Capreal, Ontario was subsequently taken to Chapleau Hospital and then air lifted to Sudbury Hospital for treatment of undertermined injuries. His present condition is classed as stable. Investigation to this point reveals that alcohol is not believed to be a factor and it is unknown if a life jacket was being worn at the time of the incident. There is indication that the weather was inclement and visibility was poor. This matter is still under investigation by Chapleau OPP members.

STUNT DRIVING RESULTS IN CHARGE

(Wawa) On August 22, 2009 at 1:20 pm an officer was patrolling northbound on Highway 17 approximately 5 kilometres north of Wawa. An Acura, black in colour was observed travelling southbound at a high rate of speed. As a result of a RADAR check the vehicle was found to be travelling at 149 kilometres per hour in a 90 kilometre per hour zone. David FORTE age 27 of Scarborough, Ontario stands charged with driving a Motor Vehicle while performing a stunt contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario. His vehicle and driver’s licence were seized for 7 days and he will appear in Provincial Offences court at a later date to answer to the charge.

R.I.D.E. – Several RIDE checks were conducted throughout the Superior East patrol area during this period.

BREAK AND ENTER A LOCAL HALL

(Elliot Lake, Ontario) On August 24, 2009 police were notified of a possible break and enter at the Collins Hall on Hillside Drive North in Elliot Lake.

Once on scene the officers noted that the front doors had small pry marks and entry had been gained sometime between 6:00 p.m. August 23, 2009 and 7:00 a.m. on August 24, 2009.

A few clack scuffmarks were noted on the floor but no other damage. Nothing was taken.

UPDATE - POLICE INVESTIGATING A SUDDEN DEATH

(KAPUSKASING, ON.) – On Saturday August 22, 2009 shortly after 1pm members of the Kapuskasing Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police were called to investigate a sudden death on Gurney Road approximately 1KM north of Hwy 11 in the Town of Kapuskasing.

Police have identified the deceased as 59 year old Donald BOTHWELL of Opasatika, Ontario. This incident is now being treated as a homicide and Police are appealing to the public for information. The deceased was last observed operating a marked Blue Bird taxi at approximately 4 am on Saturday morning, the 22nd of August 2009 until he was discovered at 1pm in the early afternoon on the same date. Any person that had contact with the deceased or has information regarding his whereabouts during that time frame is asked to call investigators at the Kapuskasing OPP at 1 888 310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1- 800- 222- 8477.

This investigation is ongoing and although the police believe this to be an isolated incident, the public is reminded to always be aware of their responsibility to remain vigilant of their surroundings for their personal safety.

The Homicide investigation is being conducted by the Kapuskasing Crime Unit and the Northeast Region Criminal Operations Program, under the direction of Detective Inspector Greg Walton, Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB), OPP General Headquarters, Orillia.
