O.P.P. INVESTIGATE 5 MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISIONS OVER CIVIC LONG WEEKEND (Herrick Twp., ON) On Friday, the 1st August at approximately 4:00 p.m. Sault Ste. Marie OPP officers responded to a motor vehicle rollover on Highway 17 North in Herrick Township.
O.P.P. INVESTIGATE 5 MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISIONS OVER CIVIC LONG WEEKEND

(Herrick Twp., ON) On Friday, the 1st August at approximately 4:00 p.m. Sault Ste. Marie OPP officers responded to a motor vehicle rollover on Highway 17 North in Herrick Township.

A dodge pick up truck traveling northbound was attempting to pass another vehicle in the passing lanes. The driver of the truck could not overtake the other vehicle that sped up and veered back to the inside lane, lost control and flipped over into the ditch.

The driver and passenger received minor injuries. No charges were laid.

(Macdonald Twp., ON) Also on Friday, 1st August at 6:30 p.m. O.P.P. and the Echo Bay First Response were called to a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 17 just East of Highway 638 turnoff in Macdonald Township.

A 2006 Buick Rendezvous was traveling westbound on Highway 17 when the driver lost control while attempting to move the family pet (dog) from the front seat to the back seat of the SUV.

The SUV left the roadway and rolled into the trees located on the north side of the highway.

The vehicle was demolished.

All four occupants, a male (42 years), female (46 years), and two children aged 8 and 16, were transported to hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries which can be attributed to the fact that they were all wearing their seatbelts.

Charged under the Highway Traffic Act with Failing to Drive in Marked lane is 46 year old Ulrike LUBS of Kimberly Drive, Tecumseh, Ontario.

The family dog, which had disappeared into the bushes after the collision, was located on Sunday by O.P.P. Officers and reunited with the family.


(Aweres Twp., ON) The driver of a vehicle traveling northbound on Highway 17 near Trout Lake Road in Aweres Township around 6:30 a.m. Saturday morning ended up in the Root River.

The driver told Police he fell asleep at the wheel. The 2007 Jeep Wrangler he was driving crossed the centre lane, into the southbound shoulder of Highway 17, struck 8 guard rails and rolled into the Root River coming to rest of the passenger side.

The jeep was demolished and had to be towed. The driver received minor injuries.

Charged with Careless Driving under the Highway Traffic Act is 17 year old Thomas Andrew MESICH of 424 North St. Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

During the course of the investigation Police learned of a passenger that had been in the Jeep but had left the scene prior to Police arrival.

A 17 year old male youth passenger was later located and placed under arrest Breach of Recognizance. The youth was held pending a Bail Hearing today.


(Laird Twp., ON) O.P.P. were called to a two vehicle collision on Highway 638 at Bar River Road in Laird Township Saturday evening at 5:15 p.m.

A 2005 Yamaha motorcycle was southbound on Bar River Road turning west onto Highway 638 when it struck a 2007 Kia stopped at the stop sign on Highway 638.

The driver of the motorcycle received minor injuries. Both vehicles sustained light damage.

Charged under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario with Improper Right Turn was the driver of the motorcycle, 16 year old Brittany HOLLINGSWORTH, of 144 Waltonen Road, Bruce Mines, Ontario.

(Slater Twp., ON) A vehicle traveling southbound on Highway 17 in Slater Township around 3:00 a.m. Sunday morning traveled too close to the edge of the roadway and struck the guardrails.

The female driver was not injured and the car she was driving did not have to be towed.

COTTAGE ENTERED

(Fisher Twp., ON) A cottage located on Highway 563 in Fisher Township had been forcefully entered, damaging a rear steel door sometime between Friday 1st August and Saturday 2nd August.

It did not appear that any items had been taken.


DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE

(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON) RIDE check stops over the weekend at various locations conducted by both the OPP Highway Safety Division and local OPP officers lead to various traffic and liquor offences.

3 charges were laid under the Liquor License Act of Ontario.

2 drivers were issued 12 hour license suspensions.

1 driver was charged for not wearing a seatbelt.

1 driver was charged for Driving Under Suspension contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of
Ontario.
