MANITOULIN WOMAN DIES AS RESULT OF MVC

Sunday’s Serious MVC Claims Life of Manitoulin Woman

(Billings Township, Ont.) – A Manitoulin woman died in hospital on Monday 14 Dec 09 in Sudbury as a result of injuries sustained from a serious Motor vehicle collision which occurred on Sunday morning 13 Dec 2009 on Manitoulin Island. She has been identified as Lorna FOGG Age 61 of Evansville, Ontario. The driver of the motor vehicle a female 51 years of age remains in hospital in critical condition.

On Sunday 13 Dec 09 Manitoulin OPP received a call advising that a serious motor vehicle collision had just occurred on Hwy 540 in Billings Township just east of the M’Chigeeng First Nation. An east bound 1997 Black Pontiac Sunfire was heading towards Little Current when it hit head on with an approaching vehicle. In the west bound lane a white 2005 International snow plow dump truck for Belanger Construction was heading in the opposite direction toward M’Chieeng. The snow plow was plowing and sanding at the time.

The highway was snow and slush covered and a light drizzle of rain was falling. As the sunfire vehicle approached the snow plow, the sunfire lost control on the slush and put the vehicle into a spin crossing the centre line and hitting the blade of the plow with the rear end of the sunfire. This caused the sunfire to be thrown into the west ditch suffering extensive damage to the vehicle. Both women had to be extricated from the vehicle with the assistance of the M’Chigenng First Nation Fire Department. Both women were taken to Mindemoya Hospital and subsequently air lifted to the Sudbury General Hospital. Highway 540 was closed for 7 hours yesterday while OPP investigated the collision. Traffic was rerouted around the scene.

The investigation is continuing by the Manitoulin OPP with the assistance of an OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigator.
