Ontario Provincial Police News Portal [MINDEMOYA] UCCM ANISHNAABE POLICE SERVICE RETURN TO POLICE SHEGUIANDAH FIRST NATION 2013-12-03

(SHEGUIANDAH FIRST NATION, ON) – The Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) had been asked by the UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service to provide policing services to the Sheguiandah First Nation while negotiations took place between the Sheguiandah First Nation Band and the UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service in the spring of 2013.

Since April 19, 2013 The OPP has been responsible for providing policing services to the Sheguiandah First Nations community.

Under the Police Services Act, the OPP is obligated to provide police services in all parts of the province that are not serviced by a municipal police service. The OPP and the UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service have a close working relationship and as in many times in the past each agency supports each other.

On Saturday December 07, 2013 at 12:00 am the UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service will resume full policing authority to the Sheguiandah First Nation with full support of the new Chief and Council of that community.

The OPP fully supports First Nations policing and the services it provides in First Nation communities throughout the province. The OPP shares the position that sustainable policing is essential to First Nations community safety and supports the provision of adequate resources to ensure effective policing options for First Nations communities. The OPP wants to see First Nations policing succeed and will continue to work with its First Nations policing partners to ensure community safety and to address First Nations policing priorities.

Residents of the Sheguiandah First Nation requiring policing services are now asked to contact the UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service at 1-705-377-7135 or 1-888-310-1122.
