POLICE INVESTIGATING HOMICIDE IN M’CHIGEENG

Preliminary Findings of Post Mortem Examination Released

(M’Chigeeng, On) – Manitoulin OPP along with the UCCM Anishnaabe Police is continuing their investigation into the murder of Shane BEBONING Age 18 of the M’Chigeeng First Nation on Manitoulin Island.

On Saturday 20 February 2010 at 2:20 am UCCM Anishnaabe Police along with officers from the Manitoulin OPP responded to a disturbance located at 13 Park Street, M’Chigeeng First Nation. An altercation had taken place among a group of young men. Officers arrived at the scene and located an 18 year old man with serious injuries; he later died at the Mindemoya hospital.

Preliminary findings of a post mortem examination took place on Monday 22 Feb 2010 at Laurentian Hospital and determined that Mr. BEBONANG died of multiple stab wounds. The following three Manitoulin men have been charged with First Degree Murder.

1. Wayne MIGWANS Age 21 of the M’Chigeeng First Nation, Ontario
2. Marlon MIGWANS Age 20 of the M’Chigeeng First Nation, Ontario
3. Michael MIGWANS Age 18 of the M’Chigeeng First Nation, Ontario

These three accused appeared for their first court appearance on Monday 22 Feb 2010 at the Gore Bay Provincial Court. All three were remanded in custody pending setting a date for their next court appearance.

The investigation is being conducted under the direction of Detective Inspector Ken Leppert of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch with members of the UCCM Anishnaabe Police, Manitoulin OPP officers and detectives from the OPP Northeast Regional Crime Unit. Members of the OPP Forensic Identification Unit are also on scene to assist with this investigation.
