(KAPUSKASING, ON.) – Members of the James Bay Detachments Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) A.T.V. and MARINE Patrol are now out on area trails, lakes and rivers. Officers are patrolling to ensure that those who enjoy the outdoor do so in a safe manner. Special attention is paid to those who “Drink and Ride” as well as those who cause damage by trespassing on private property with Off Road Vehicles (ORV). Officers are also there to ensure that riders have the appropriate documentation for their vehicles and vessels and to provide direct education to riders and boaters by answering safety questions or concerns.

One growing trend that concern police is the misuse of various motorized scooter type vehicles and golf carts while having consumed alcohol. A vehicle is defined in the Criminal Code of Canada as: “a vehicle that is drawn, propelled or driven by any means other than muscular power”. If stopped by police “anywhere” while having consumed alcohol, the person in the seat or position ordinarily occupied by a person who operates a motor vehicle or vessel shall be deemed to have “Care and Control” and be subject to the offence of impaired driving. Operating scooters or golf carts on private property will not allow you to circumvent the Law.

This summer use common sense and put safety first! Always wear an approved helmet while riding and personal floatation device (PFD) while on the water.
