Burlington Man Missing

(Wawa, Ontario) Superior East OPP, JRCC Trenton, United States Coast Guard, Ontario Provincial Police Helicopter as well as the O.P.P. Underwater Search and Recovery Unit are presently at the scene or en route to assist in a search for a missing man from Burlington.

At approximately 5:20 PM, on the 17th of July 2006, Superior East OPP received a call advising that an overturned kayak was located near the mouth of the Michipicoten River on Lake Superior.

The kayak was found to be fully loaded with equipment and included a life jacket. Documentation indicated 76-year-old Herbert POHL of Burlington, Ontario, had operated the kayak. POHL had begun his kayak journey in Pukaskwa National Park and was to arrive at the Michipicoten River at approximately 2 PM on the 17th of July 2006.

He has not been located yet.

If anyone has any information on the location of POHL or has seen anything in relation to this missing person they can contact their local detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122.

MATTAWA DELACRES STATE OF EMERGENCY

(Mattawa, ON) “Mayor Dean Backer is declaring a State of Emergency for the Town of Mattawa as a result of the severe storm hitting the community today. Homes and businesses have received severe damage. Power lines are down throughout the community.

The Emergency Operation Control Group is working with the Community Emergency Plan.

EMERGENCY CENTRES IN ST.CHARLES AND FRENCH RIVER AREA

(NOELVILLE, On.) Emergency centres have been established for residents of St.Charles and the French River area who find themselves without 911 or phone service In the aftermath of yesterdays storm. Residents needing assistance can attend either of these centers.

French River / Alban / Noelville Emergency Centre:

The Noelville Fire Department, which is adjacent to the Municipal Office.
