Sault Ste Marie OPP received a call at 4:30 p.m. Monday the 25th of November that a commercial fisherman was overdue from fishing on Lake Superior. Mike Neveau and his son had reported by a broken up cell phone call at 2:30 that they were having engine trouble while enroute from Gros Cap to the dock at Goulais Mission Dock. A response by Sault Ste Marie OPP, US Coast Guard and family members was undertaken. Around 7:25 the 30 Ft. fishing tug was found by a family member and the crew returned to shore. The police and coast guard had difficulty finding the vessel due to large search area. This incident is an example of why it is necessary to have a marine radio which is capable of contacting the Canadian Coast Guard. A more effective and timely rescue could have been mounted with accurate information as to the location of the vessel.

Laird Township Break and Enter

A break and enter into a residence at the 100 block of Laurel rd in Laird Township. The residence was entered by forcing the front door. The home was broken into sometime between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Monday the 25th. Stolen from the residence was a gold chain with a cross on it. A quantity of Canadian Tire money was also taken. The suspects arrived and left the scene in a vehicle. The OPP are seeking public assistance in solving this and other Break and Enters that are occurring across the Detachment area. MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION CLAIMS ONE LIFE

(Gould Township, Ontario) On Monday November 24, 2008 at approximately 5:30 p.m. the East Algoma OPP were advised of a motor vehicle collision in Gould Township, Ontario – approximately 40 kms north of Thessalon, Ontario on Highway 129.

The collision involved a 1998 Kenworth Transport Truck and a 2005 Chevrolet Astro Van. The transport was travelling northbound on Highway 129 when the trailer portion lost traction and slid into the southbound lane. The southbound van then struck the trailer in the southbound lane. The collision occurred on a curve.

The driver of the van, Peter ROBIDAS (48) of Markstay Warren, Ontario was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the transport, Denis RIOPEL (46) of Chapleau, Ontario was not hurt in the collision.

The transport trailer sustained damage to the back wheels. The van sustained major damage.

The weather at the time of the collision was a rain/snow mixture. The roads were a mixture of slush and ice.

The highway was closed for approximately 6 ½ hours from 5:30 p.m. till 12:10 a.m.

The investigation is continuing by members of the East Algoma OPP and the OPP’s Technical Traffic Collision Investigators.

No charges have been laid.
