STUNT DRIVER CHARGED (White River) – On Friday October 9, 2009 at 8:37 a/m officers patrolling northbound on Highway 17, Hunt Township just south of White River had occasion to observe a southbound 2009 Ford F150 proceeding at a high rate of speed.

(White River) – On Friday October 9, 2009 at 8:37 a/m officers patrolling northbound on Highway 17, Hunt Township just south of White River had occasion to observe a southbound 2009 Ford F150 proceeding at a high rate of speed. Subsequent RADAR reading confirmed that the vehicle was travelling at 140 kph in a posted 90 kph zone. The vehicle was stopped and as a result the driver, Gary FOGARTY age 40 of HAMNER, Ontario was charged with Stunt Driving and Speeding contrary to the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. His vehicle and Driver’s License was seized for 7 days. The driver will appear in court on February 17, 2010 at Wawa to answer to the charges.

THREATS/DANGEROUS DRIVING

(Chapleau) – On Saturday October 10, 2009 at approximately 10:58 a/m Chapleau officers received a complaint from hunters in the SULTAN area on Blamey Road that they had been threatened by a male subject who had also driven towards them a number of times in a dangerous manner with his vehicle. Officers, along with MNR Inforcement Officers attended the scene and spoke to all parties involved. As a result of further investigation Daniel GRAVEL age 48yrs of SULTAN, Ontario has been charged with the following Criminal Code offences;
1. Utter Threats
2. Dangerous Operation of a motor vehicle.
Mr. GRAVEL will appear in Chapleau criminal court on December 2, 2009.

MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION HIGHWAY 17 SOUTH

(Wawa) – On October 11, 2009 at approximately Wawa officers attended Highway 17, Peever Township north of Montreal River regarding a report of a 2 vehicle collision involving a northbound Ford Focus and a southbound tractor/trailer unit. Investigation revealed that the Ford Focus had skidded sideways into the southbound lane coming into contact with the Volvo tractor/trailer unit. The collision resulted in the Ford Focus becoming pinned between the tractor/trailer unit and the steel guard rails. The driver of the car; Kalyn KRYSTIA age 22 of SAULT STE MARIE, Ontario had to be extricated from the vehicle by the Wawa Fire Department and transported to Sault Area Hospital by Ambulance with serious but non-life threatening injuries. KRYSTIA was the lone occupant of the car. The two occupants of the tractor/trailer unit were not injured. Road conditions at the time of the collision were slushy with slippery conditions. No charges are expected to be laid in this incident. Highway 17 between Wawa and Batchawana was closed for approximately 4 hours while the investigation and removal of vehicles was conducted.

OPERATION IMPACT – Members of Superior East OPP conducted several RIDE checks during the long weekend initiative resulting in over 350 vehicles being checked Three Liquor Licence Act charges were laid; one three day suspension for a “Warn” on the Roadside Screening Device. Sixty seven speeding charges, 1 seatbelt charge and one Drive While Prohibited charge was laid during the initiative.

FIREY COLLISION RESULTS IN NUMEROUS CHARGES

(Blind River, ON.) On October 11, 2009 at 5:00 am police received a call of a vehicle in the ditch on fire near Boom Camp road in Blind River. When police arrived the vehicle was engulfed in flames and The Blind River Fire Department was on scene. It was learned that the driver who was the lone occupant had just left the scene in another vehicle. Shortly afterwards officers located and arrested the male driver. Charged is 19 year old Aaron LABRASH of Blind River. Mr. Labrash is charged with the following criminal offences:
1) Impaired operation
2) Being over 80 mgs
3) Failing to remain at the scene of an accident

Mr. Labrash was also charged with having a G2 licence with a blood alcohol concentration above zero contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. Labrash was released and is scheduled to appear in Provincial Court on January 7, 2010.

OPERATION IMPACT HAD AN “IMPACT” THIS THANKSGIVING WEEKEND

(Sault Ste. Marie, ON) - Officer’s from the Sault Ste. Marie OPP Detachment were involved in Operation Impact this past long weekend, a national campaign to make Canada’s roads the safest in the world.

The following is a breakdown of charges laid:

Speeding – 65 charges

Seatbelts - 5

Suspended driving – 1

Various other moving violations – 6

Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act – 1

Documentation related – 4

Officer’s patrolled area highways, waterways, and trails looking for behaviour that put driver’s, passengers, and other road users most at risk including impaired driving, seatbelt use, and all aspects related to aggressive driving.

TWO MOTOR VEHCILE COLLISIONS REPORTED

(Slater Twp., ON)
- A pick up truck travelling northbound on Highway 17 Friday evening at 8:20 p.m. collided with a moose.

The driver was not injured but the moose was deceased.

The vehicle had to be towed.

(Macdonald Twp., ON) – A minivan travelling on Highway 17 east collided with a bear Saturday evening at 11:15 p.m.

The driver was not injured but the bear was deceased.

There was only minor damage to the vehicle.

CAN YOU HELP POLICE SOLVE A CRIME?

(Laird Twp., ON) - Sometime between Friday, September 25th and Friday, October 2nd 2009 unknown persons walked around the fence of the Laird Raceway, and broke into several buildings.

Once inside culprit(s) located the keys for several vehicles. They used the vehicles to have their own crash derby.

One of the vehicles was spray painted with letters on the hood, rear windshield and trunk.
