Hot Air Balloon sends Distress Signal

Ranger Lake, Ont., The night shift officers at the Sault Ste Marie OPP Detachment had just a little something different to talk about over coffee last night.

At about 8:30 p.m. last night officers with the Sault Detachment received a call that a hot air balloon had landed near Laughing Lake, northeast of Ranger Lake. An automatic distress signal was received from the balloon that may have indicated that the occupants were either in trouble or the balloon had crashed.

As officers responded to the area, the pilot of the balloon called authorities and advised that, this really was a hot air balloon and that the signal was emitted in error and there was no emergency.

Officers with the Sault Ste Marie Detachment attended the Laughing Lake area and located the balloonist. The occupants of the balloon were with a their ground support team and didn’t require any police assistance. All involved stayed in Sault Ste Marie overnight and will try to get the balloon airborne sometime today.

It turns out that a hot air balloon race had started in New Mexico, USA. Unconfirmed reports indicate that apparently the race may have been to see who could fly the furthest northeast from New Mexico in the fastest time. Due to weather conditions several pilots diverted over Ontario.

The OPP Communications center in North Bay also received similar reports in the Chapleau and Espanola Detachment areas. One balloon landed in the Chapleau Detachment area and two balloons landed in the Espanola Detachment area.
