OPP warns of door to door salesmen

ELLIOT LAKE – The OPP want to warn residents to be careful when someone comes to your front door saying they are a salesman.  On October 6, 2014 a resident in Elliot Lake answered here door and was met by a male saying he was representing a company and needed to check their hot water tank. The home owner was suspicious and refused the person entry to their house. A check with the company confirmed they had no sales people in the area.

DOOR THREAT? BE EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS IF:

  1. Unknown person at your door…Don’t open it, talk through it!
  2. If approached in your yard…Don’t invite them in!
  3. Suspicious salesperson tries to rush you to buy something…Refuse!
  4. Salesperson suggests they’re working in your area…Don’t believe them, get estimates or call the company to verify their identity!

Remember, you are in charge, take control. Persons who refuse to leave your property when directed to do so are trespassing and can be charged.

To report a potential fraud, call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501. If you are a victim of fraud or are being harassed by high pressure salespersons and wish to notify the OPP, call 1-888-310-1122.
