(Elliot Lake, Ont.) The East Algoma OPP is currently investigating a break and enter at the Collins Hall in Elliot Lake.

On the 15th of September 2008 police attended the building located at on Hillside Drive North regarding a break and enter. Through investigation police learned that the suspect(s) had pried a door to enter the premises. An attempt to enter a safe was with negative results.

Nothing appeared to be missing at the time of the report.

Anyone with information regarding the above break enter is asked to call the

LOCAL YOUTH CHARGED WITH ASSAULT

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) The OPP has charged a local youth after receiving a complaint of a possible assault.

Police learned that the victim was a local high school on September 15, 2008 when the suspect allegedly assaulted him.

Charged with Assault is a 17-year-old male of Elliot Lake. The accused is scheduled to appear in court in Elliot Lake on November 4, 2008.

The name of the accused will not be released under the jurisdiction of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

COTTAGERS ON ALERT AFTER RECENT BREAK & ENTER

On Monday 08 Sep 2008 at 3:32 pm Manitoulin Officers responded to a report of a cottage break and enter on Leask Bay Shore Lane in Assiginack Township. Owners of the cottage returned home to find that sometime over the previous night had entered their cottage and adjoining shed. Entry was gained by someone kicking in the door. Little damage was done however they entered the shed where 5 gallons of gas, an American style come along and ATV battery were stolen. Police officers managed to collect DNA evidence at the scene and are presently investigating this crime. Police are also asking the publics assistance that if anyone knows about this crime to call police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS. Police also advise that the members of the Leask Bay Cottage/Neighbourhood Watch group will also be on the alert reporting suspicious persons in the area.

OPP INVESTIAGTE FRAUD INTO FALSE PRESCRIPTIONS

On Tuesday 09 Sep 08 at 10:30 am Manitoulin OPP received a call from a physician from Little Current advising that false prescriptions were trying to be filled at pharmacies in the Sudbury area with fraudulently using the local doctor’s signature. The pharmacists were quickly able to tell the prescriptions were false and had them confirmed by the local doctors. The prescriptions were for strong pain killing medication and once it was confirmed that the prescriptions were false then Greater Sudbury Regional Police joined into the investigation. Suspects have been identified and Fraud charges are pending. Constable Allan Boyd Community Services Officer with the Manitoulin OPP warns the public that it is a very serious offense to forge a Doctors signature on a false prescription. The medical community and police take this as serious criminal activity. Pharmacists are trained to know what to look for and too often people find themselves in the court figuring they can get away with it.

MANITOULIN OPP ASSIST WITH INTERNATIONAL FRAUD INVESTIGATION

On Monday 08 Sep 2008 at 12:59 PM Manitoulin OPP officers were advised by a Manitoulin resident that they were defrauded in a travel scheme. An organization had booked a trip to Europe with 51 people involved each person paying $3500. The company was a tour company based in Vista, California, U.S.A.. Members of the group have been advised that the company is going out of business and there are no provisions for a refund. Manitoulin OPP Officers contacted the San Diego Sheriff’s Office in California who advised they were aware of the Company and were investigating along with the Insurance Fraud Unit of the District Attorney Office.

STORE CLERK CHARGED WITH INTERNAL THEFT

On Friday 12 Sep 2008 at 11:52 Pm Manitoulin OPP received a complaint from a variety store owner who advises that an employee has been stealing items from the store. It is alleged that the employee removed and cashed in a large amount of lottery tickets along with DVD movies and food items. After a through investigation and review of evidence a charge was laid. Charged with Theft under $5000 is Curssta Amanda HOPKINS age 19 of Billings Township. She was released on an appearance notice to attend Gore Bay Criminal court to answer to the said charge.

FIRE DISTROYS VEHICLE

On Sunday 14 Sep 2008 at 7:08 pm Officers with the Manitoulin OPP responded to damage done to a vehicle which was parked at a residence over the weekend. The 1996 Ford F150 Pick Up truck was parked at a residence located on Emery Road in Allan Township. The owner left the residence for the weekend returning Sunday evening to find the vehicle had been involved in a very hot fire that destroyed all the plastic, cloth, rubber and glass. Through the investigation there was no evidence of arson, it was learned that the model of truck had a recall about a defective switch which could cause an electrical fire. No One was injured in the fire.
