WAWA – A Wawa resident is facing charges in connection with a fraud investigation that police say was initiated this past winter.

The Superior East Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police says that on Feb. 20, they began an investigation after a local volunteer organization reported fraudulent purchases allegedly made by a board member.

In a news release, the OPP said that on May 22, after a lengthy police investigation, Michelle Wheatley, 59, of Wawa was arrested and charged with one count of fraud over $5,000.

The release does not disclose the organization she worked for.

Wheatley was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on July 8 in Wawa.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Wheatley is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
