An Echo Bay man was charged under the Highway Traffic Act yesterday after colliding with a transport.

Yesterday at about 3:00 p.m. a transport was traveling west on Hwy 17 in Laird Twp approaching the intersection of Pumpkin Point Road. A pick up truck was traveling south on Pumpkin Point Road approaching the intersection. The truck driver told police that he thought the pick up truck was not going to stop for the stop sign. The transport driver moved over to the left lane in anticipation of a crash.

The pick up truck did not stop and smashed into the back portion of the trailer on the transport. No one reported any injuries.

Thirty three year old David Troy WALKER of Oakwood Drive in Laird Twp has been charged with Failing to Stop for a Stop Sign contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.


INJURIES IN SECOND LAIRD TOWNSHIP CRASH

Laird Twp, Ont.,

One person was injured after a vehicle went off the roadway and rolled over yesterday afternoon.

At about 5:15 p.m. yesterday a mini van was traveling eastbound on Hwy 17 near the intersection of Lake George Road and Hwy 17. The driver of the van reports hitting or running over an unknown object on the roadway, possibly a snow or ice chuck off another vehicle.

The driver lost control of the van and it started to spin around on the highway. The van entered the ditch and rolled onto its side. The driver, the only occupant, was transported to hospital for what has been described as minor injuries.

JACKKNIFED TRANSPORT CLOSES HWY 17 NORTH

Pancake Bay, Ont.,

Sault Ste Marie OPP closed Hwy 17 between Sault Ste Marie and Wawa last night due to a crash involving a transport.

Last night at about 10:15 p.m. a transport was southbound on Hwy 17 in the area between Pancake Bay and Montreal River. The driver of the truck lost his bearings in a white out. The truck struck a set of guideposts and then jack knifed across the highway blocking the entire roadway.

Police closed Hwy 17 from Wawa to Batchawana until the rig was removed from the roadway. The Highway was reopened at about 4:00 a.m. this morning.

The Ontario Provincial Police advise the public of the following road closure.

Location: Hwy 17, 20 km North of Batchawana Bay. Closed from Sault Ste. Marie to Wawa.

Detachment area: Sault. Ste Marie

Time of road closure: 10:24 pm

Reason for the closure: Jack knifed tractor trailer blocking complete roadway.

LOCAL MALE FACES DRUG CHARGES

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) February 5th, 2007 officers of the OPP Drug Enforcement Section with the assistance of members of the East Algoma OPP executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act Search Warrant at a residence on Spruce Avenue in Elliot Lake.

As a result of the search, police located and seized 55 Marihuana plants and 20 grams of dry marihuana valued at $55,400.00. Police further located growing equipment valued at $500.00.

Charged with Production of Marihuana and Possession of Marihuana is Steven Rose SASSEVILLE (56) of Elliot Lake.
