Officers are continuing their investigation into the fatal collision that occurred this morning 17 kilometres west of Blind River on Highway 17. Further examination of the scene confirmed the westbound tractor trailer crossed the center of the road into the path of the eastbound tractor trailer.

The collision resulted in the deaths of the driver, 32 year old Balwinder SINGH of Brampton and his passenger 44 year old Balvir SINGH of Montreal who were in the westbound vehicle. The driver of the eastbound tractor trailer, 45 year old Stanley SPURR of Nairn Centre was also fatally injured.

The highway remains open to one lane of traffic while crews continue their cleanup.

Highway 17 is now open to one lane of traffic after an early morning collision. Officers from the East Algoma OPP are currently investigating a head on collision involving two tractor trailers. The collision occurred around 6:00 a.m. this morning approximately 17 kilometres west of Blind River. Two technical traffic collision investigators (TTCI) from the OPP are assisting in the investigation.

Early indications are that the westbound tractor trailer collided with the east bound tractor trailer in a portion of the eastbound lane. The three lane stretch of highway was wet at the time and it was dark at the time. Road conditions or visibility are not believed to be factor in this collision at this time. Both drivers and the passenger in the westbound tractor trailer were fatally injured. The names of those involved are not being released pending notification of next of kin.

Police Release Victim’s Name

Ontario Provincial Police continues its investigation into a fatal motorized snow vehicle collision that occurred at 9:10 a.m. this morning, January 12, 2010, in Dymond Township. The snowmobile driver, 19 year old Jessy DESROCHERS of Hudson Township was pronounced dead at the scene.
The lone male snowmobiler was traveling west on an opened OFSC trail and failed to stop for an approaching north bound ONR freight train.
Officers from the Temiskaming OPP and Technical Traffic Collision Investigators from the Northeast Region Highway Safety Division continue the investigation.

DOMESTIC RELATED ARREST

A 48 year old male was arrested on the 13th of January at 12:15 am at his residence and charged with one count of threatening and one count of assault.

It is alleged that on the 11th of January the accused got into a verbal argument with his common law spouse at their residence and threatened bodily harm to her.

On the 12th January it is alleged the accused assaulted her by punching her. No medical attention was required.

The accused is to appear in bail court this morning.
