HELP PREVENT BEARS FROM COMING AROUND YOUR PROPERTY

(Elliot Lake, Ontario) It's black bear season in Ontario, so be BEAR WISE!

• Household garbage is the single biggest attractant for black bears. And once they get a taste for garbage, they will keep coming back, again and again. Please, store your garbage behind closed doors in your garage, basement, or a secure, bear-proof storage area. Freeze “table scraps” or any unwanted food and put it in the garbage when putting it out the morning of garbage day... not the night before.

• Bears' keen sense of smell attracts them to the food odours left on your barbeque grill. So, they come around, foraging for food. Bears have been known to lift barbeques right off peoples' porches. During bear season, clean that grill after every use. Burn off the food residue and grease... and wash the grill thoroughly, until there's no food odour left.

Once bears get a taste for an easy meal, they keep coming back.

To report bear problems, call the Ministry of Natural Resources hotline at 1 866 514 2327.

In an immediate emergency, call you’re the OPP, or 911.
