Road safety the focus for this Civic Holiday weekend

(Elliot Lake, Ontario) – This weekend the men and women of the East Algoma OPP will be out diligently patrolling highways and roads. Speeding, following too closely, improper lane changes, improper passing, disobeying traffic control, and failing to yield the right of way are factors significantly in terms of the collisions investigated by the OPP. The East Algoma OPP urge motorists to consider their driving habits and commit to changing behaviours that put themselves and their family’s lives at risk.

"Staff Sergeant Brian Knowler of the East Algoma OPP would like to remind all motorists using the highways this long weekend that controlling your vehicle is your number one priority while behind the wheel. Talking or texting on a phone, shuffling songs on a MP3 player, reaching for a coffee, even noisy passengers; all can be distractions that take your attention off the road. It only takes a split second for your vehicle to veer into oncoming traffic or onto the shoulder, a split second that could change your life forever.

Drive within the speed limits, plan ahead for a safe ride if you're going to be drinking, and make sure you and your passengers are all wearing seatbelts. The goal of the East Algoma OPP this long weekend is to ensure that everyone on our roads makes it safely to their destination. Have a safe and enjoyable long weekend.”

Enjoy the Civic Holiday weekend and make sure you keep safety in mind.
