UPDATE - AGGRAVATED ASSAULT INVESTIGATION UPGRADED TO SECOND DEGREE MURDER

(COCHRANE, ON) Following a joint investigation by the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service (NAPS) and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), a Constance Lake First Nation man has been charged in relation with the death of 23 year old victim Myles Shaganash, also of Constance Lake First Nation.

As a result of the ongoing investigation initiated on June 15, 2013, OPP officers from the James Bay Detachments Crime Unit formally charged 19 year old Dakota BEDWASH with second degree murder.  The accused attended bail court in the Ontario Court of Justice in Cochrane, Ontario today.

The investigation is continuing under the direction of Acting Detective Inspector Rob Hagerman of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB), with the assistance of NAPS and OPP James Bay Detachments Crime Unit.

ESPANOLA OPP LAY CHARGES AFTER AN ASSAULT WITH A WEAPON IN WEBBWOOD

(SUDBURY / ESPANOLA) Espanola OPP have charged a woman after a disturbance at a residence in Webbwood on 2 July, 2013.  A approximately 07:45 am, members of the Espanola detachment responded to a report of a stabbing in Webbwood.  A sixty three (63) year old male had been stabbed in the face. Skye Goodchild was later located and charged with Assault with a weapon and Breach of Recognizance. Goodchild was held for bail. 

TWO CHARGED AFTER REFUSING TO STOP FOR POLICE

(BLIND RIVER, ON)  Members of the East Algoma OPP in Blind River received a call July 3rd, 2013 at approximately 3:57 a.m. requesting assistance in locating a vehicle westbound from Espanola.  It was reported that the vehicle appeared to be swerving all over the road. 

At approximately 4:15 a.m. officers located the vehicle traveling westbound along highway 17 in the Community of Serpent River.  Police followed the vehicle attempting to stop the vehicle.  Several attempts were made to stop the vehicle when eventually the suspect vehicle entered a ditch and came to rest at the bottom.

Officers arrested and charged two males.

Charged with the following is Gurinder Singh MALHI (37) of Brampton, Ontario.

  • Flight from police
  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • Impaired Operation
  • Obstruct/Resist Police
  • Exceed 80

The driver was also charged under the Highway Traffic Act with the following:

  • Race a motor vehicle

Also charged is Ramandeep Singh CHATA (43) of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

  • Obstruct/Resist Police

Both males remain in custody awaiting a bail hearing in Sault Ste Marie July 4th, 2013.

CITY HIT WITH GRAFFITI OVER THE WEEKEND

(ELLIOT LAKE, ON) – Members of the East Algoma OPP have been busy investigating several incidents regarding graffiti in the City of Elliot Lake.

June 27th, 2013 police received a complaint that an outside wall of the Royal Canadian Legion had been spray painted. 

A call was received from the landlord of 77 Spruce Avenue on July 1, 2013 stating that exterior walls had been spray painted with graffiti.  Several other calls were received during the day stating the same graffiti had been spray painted on other walls.

Other victims are the Collins Hall temporarily Foodland on Hillside Drive North, the Rio Algom Plaza on Newfoundland Walk and 50 Ontario Avenue.

This mischief is costly to the owners and the community.

OPP would like to ask the assistance of the public by reporting any suspicious vehicles or person(s).
