IMPAIRED/BLOW OVER/DANGEROUS OPERATION (WAWA) – An incident on Dog Lake; West Township in Algoma District on March 24, 2009 resulted in a number of charges against a Sudbury man.
IMPAIRED/BLOW OVER/DANGEROUS OPERATION

(WAWA) – An incident on Dog Lake; West Township in Algoma District on March 24, 2009 resulted in a number of charges against a Sudbury man. During the early evening of March 24th MNR Conservation Officers requested assistance from Superior East OPP regarding fishermen on Dog Lake. It was reported that the MNR officers were having difficulty stopping a group of six fishermen in order to identify them and check their documents. Superior OPP members attended on snow machines and observed one of the subjects proceeding across the lake. It was noted that he was not wearing a helmet. MNR and OPP attempted to stop the subject who tried to outrun the officers. At one point a MNR officer tried to physically stop the machine by grabbing the back end but was dragged approximately 200 metres behind the machine. Officers eventually were able to stop the machine and the operator was arrested. The MNR officer was not injured. A strong smell of an alcoholic beverage was noted on the male’s breath and he was returned to Wawa for breath tests. As a result of this incident, Kenneth Matthew TAIPALUS of Sudbury, Ontario stands charged with the following Criminal Code charges (1) DANGEROUS OPERATION OF MOTOR VEHICLE; (2) IMPAIRED OPERATION OF MOTOR VEHICLE (3) BLOW OVER 80 MILLIGRAMS OF ALCOHOL. He will be appearing in Wawa Criminal Court at a later date to answer to the charges. TAIPALUS also had his driver’s licence immediately suspended at the scene for 90 days.

R.I.D.E. – Officers checked 129 vehicles at various RIDE checks resulting in 1 Highway Traffic Act charge being laid.

VEHICLE DAMAGED

(Elliot Lake, Ontario) The East Algoma OPP is investigating a mischief to a vehicle. On March 23, 2009 police received a call to attend a parking lot on Mississauga Avenue regarding damage to a vehicle. On scene police learned that unknown person(s) used an unknown object to scratch the vehicle on the front fender as well as other scratches along the entire passenger side of the vehicle.

ASSAULT CHARGE FOR LOCAL YOUTH

(Elliot Lake, Ontario) The East Algoma OPP is investigating the report of an assault at a local high school in Elliot Lake. Police learned that on March 23, 2009 the accused allegedly approached the victim, words were exchanged and then assaulted the victim while on school property.

The victim attended the local hospital and was treated for her injuries.

Police arrested and charged a 14-year-old female from Elliot Lake with Assault. The female remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing.

The name of the accused will not be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
