Give cancer 'the bird' at second annual Turkey Trot 5K

SAULT STE MARIE, MICH. - Sovereign Communications and Leitz Sports Center are teaming up again this year to give cancer “the bird” at the Second Annual Turkey Trot 5K Race to benefit the Relay for Life of the Eastern Upper Peninsula Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, Nov. 22, 2018.

The event will begin and end at Leitz Sports Center, 2512 I-75 Business Spur, Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Registration for this non-competitive event starts at 7 a.m. and is $30 per person. The race begins at 8:30 a.m.

Medals will be given to everyone who finishes, with prizes for the top finishers in each category. The race will be timed and participants will be provided with their times at the end of the race. Those who wish can pre-register online at the event’s Facebook page.

The brain-child of Andie Aiello, Traffic Director at Sovereign Communications and Event Lead of the Relay For Life of the Eastern Upper Peninsula, the Turkey Trot 5K was conceived as an opportunity to have some fun and raise money for the Relay For Life of the EUP.

Aiello, not being a runner herself, contacted Danna Sanderson from Leitz Sports Center for help. Sanderson is an accomplished competitive runner that has competed in several races around the country as well as a cancer survivor.

“There are turkey trots across the country and people go all out for these races, dressed as turkeys and Sault Ste. Marie was certainly ready for it,” said Sanderson in commenting on the participation in last year’s race. Over 100 people participated in the inaugural event last year. Participants came from throughout the eastern Upper Peninsula and several runners were from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

The event is sponsored by Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home, On The Mark Entertainment, Leitz Sports Center and Sovereign Communications.
