Lake Superior State University will begin offering a 22-credit minor in Public Health effective January 2020. Public Health focuses on improving community well-being through public education, governmental policy analysis, determining the sources of newly emerging diseases and health risks, as well as preventing disease and disability.
Public health is an interdisciplinary field, including Environmental Science, Psychology, Political Science, Health Promotion, Kinesiology, Sociology, and Biology. Lake State’s Public Health minor includes three core courses—Introduction to Public Health, Medical Sociology, and Health Promotion. Students have the option to complete one of three specialty concentrations in Environmental Health, Health Education, or Drug Abuse Prevention.
The Public Health minor will be of interest to students studying in fields as diverse as the Health Sciences, Social Sciences, as well as Biology and Environmental Science. A background in public health will be valuable to anyone who is considering entering fields such as health promotion and education, applied clinical disciplines such as medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, and nursing as well as those in the applied social and behavioural sciences.
