Lake Superior State University chemistry professor Barb Keller shows off her department's state-of-the-art nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer during a behind the scenes tour on Sept. 30.

The million-dollar instrument was purchased this past summer in part through a National Science Foundation grant. LSSU faculty and students use it on projects ranging from environmental-quality contract work, to research into new methods of testing pharmaceuticals. More than 300 LSSU student-hopefuls and their families were visiting campus for an admissions open house that drew from as far away as Indiana.
