Every child deserves the chance to succeed and for many, a supportive role model can make all the difference. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sault Ste. Marie is committed to creating life-changing connections for the young people it serves.
Marc Sageloly, Board Chair of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sault Ste. Marie and long-time volunteer says, “Our agency is a dedicated and supportive force for positive youth development in our community. Through our mentorship programs we are a compassionate, inclusive, and impactful organization that strengthens community bonds.”
Bridging the gap
Through their unique mentorship programs, Big Brothers Big Sisters bridges the gap for youth facing significant life challenges by helping them grow into more confident and resilient individuals. Mentorship isn’t just about offering occasional advice; it’s about a deep, ongoing relationship between the mentors and mentees that is built on trust. The agency pairs children and youth with caring adults who are committed to being there for them.
Mentorships are often one-on-one matches but there is also couples mentoring where a husband and wife will help a young person navigate life’s ups and downs. There is also a cross gender matching program offered by the agency.
Because there is a waiting list for a “Little” to be matched with a “Big,” they developed the Big Bunch program. Sageloly says, “We put a lot of resources into the Big Bunch program because we’ve found that if young people are on the waiting list for a long time, they feel disconnected to Big Brothers Big Sisters. It gives them a sense of belonging even though they are not matched yet.”
Big Bunch mentoring brings young people who are facing similar challenges together, which can be a tremendous support system. Sageloly adds, “We have many youths who started off in the Big Bunch program who were reserved and shy and by the time they were matched with a mentor one-on-one, they were more confidence and outgoing.”

Mentorship’s lasting impact
Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mentoring programs can be transformative. Studies show that mentorship can improve grades, reduce the high school dropout rate, and encourage young people to be motivated and set higher academic and career goals for themselves. Sageloly says, “Knowing someone is cheering them on makes a world of difference. Treating youth with dignity and respect helps develop confidence and self-esteem.”

Dan’s Journey
Dan grew up in a whirlwind of uncertainty. He was raised in a chaotic home, facing challenges most of us cannot imagine. When his parents separated, he moved to Cambridge with his mother. He says, “My mother went into a deep depressive state, and I was missing a lot of school. With the help of a local pastor, I got involved with Big Brothers at the age of 6 and I do remember it having a positive impact. People were trying to help with the chaos surrounding me.”
Dan was put in foster care from the age of 11 to 17. He says, “I had a Children’s Aid Society caseworker who assumed the role of mentor. He taught me life skills, morals and values. He taught me what is acceptable behavior and what is not okay.”
At 17 years old, Dan was in a homeless shelter. Working as a dishwasher gave him enough money to move into a motel and then an apartment. Once he got his high school diploma, he pursued a college education. Dan earned two diplomas, one in civil engineering and another in carpentry techniques, graduating with distinction. He says, “I’ve been trying to get ahead in life and finally I’m starting to see some sunshine.”
Today, at the age of 29, Dan has his own contracting company and is married to an amazing woman, and he has two wonderful children. He never forgot the mentorship support that he received along the way, which began when he was very young at Big Brothers Big Sisters. Dan says, “It’s been a hell of a journey, but given what I’ve gone through, I feel like I have something to offer the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization. My life was chaotic, but many young people being mentored come from very troubled backgrounds.”
One day, at the Big Brothers Big Sisters office he saw a posting for a teen who wanted to be an engineer or carpenter and who also loved sports. Dan thought he would be an ideal match and now he is that teen’s mentor. He says, “I’ve always wanted to be part of Big Brothers because youth need support and guidance through their failures. It’s very rewarding. I want to become the best dad I can be for my children despite the circumstances of my own childhood.” I hope to be a parent who is understanding but firm, and to offer compassion and empathy to someone who needs it.”
