Graffiti tagging is a form of vandalism that is on the increase in the city of Sault Ste. Marie.

A graffiti inventory pilot project identified 520 instances of graffiti in four square blocks of the downtown core with 70 percent of it identified as property damage to the buildings.

Tagging can be very simple or extremely complex.

Taggers use paint, and markers to leave their mark on property without the consent of the property owner.

Tagging costs businesses and institutions money.

It decreases property value, community pride and in some cases one’s own sense of personal safety.
