Fatal Fire
Members of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service remain at the scene of a fatal fire that occurred in the 500 block of Albert Street West late last evening. Emergency crews from the City Police, the Fire Services and the Ambulance Services attended at the address shortly after 11 pm in response to a 911 call. The fire was contained to one of the units in the apartment building. A male victim was taken by ambulance to the hospital. The name of the victim will not be release until his identity can be confirmed and next of kin is notified. Officers from the Investigation Services Section are continuing their investigation into this fire and will be working with an investigator from the Ontario Fire Marshall’s office, who will be in the Sault this morning.
Yesterday’s Release:
Yesterday afternoon just before 4 pm, two youths attempted to rob ticket sellers at Rome’s in the front lobby. It is alleged at that one of the youths entered the store, walked around where the seller was and then left. This youth then re-attended in the store and threatened the seller with a knife. The would- be- robber was scared off when another person in the area left to call the police and notify security. The robbery left empty handed and no one was hurt. Officers, with the assistance of witnesses and store security staff, were able to ascertain that the robber had an accomplice. It is alleged that this second youth gave the would be robber a change of clothes to put over theirs to go into the store with and then after the thwarted robbery, took the clothes back and put them in a duffle bag in the hopes of confusing police and security with the change of the clothing description. City Police arrested the youths shortly after the incident. The first youth, age 15 has been charged with one count of attempt robbery and one count of threatening to cause death or bodily harm. The second youth, also age 15, has been charged with one count of accessory after the fact and one count of party to the offence of attempt robbery. Both youths will appear in court on March 29th.
Update:
Yesterday City Police charged 3 more youths in connection to the attempt robbery of the ticket seller. A 16-year old youth and 2 14-year old youths have all been charged with one count each of conspire to commit the offence of robbery. The 3 youths will appear in bail court today.
Motor Vehicle Collisions
In the last 24-hour period City Police responded to 16 motor vehicle collisions. None resulted in any injuries. For the most part road conditions played a factor in the collisions. The public is reminded to again slow down and adjust their driving habits to the conditions.
Break and Enter
City Police received a report of a break and enter into a home in the 600 block of Second Line West. Nothing was taken from the home. Would be thieves attempted to break into a home overnight on the 16th in the 200 block of Brown Street but were not successful.
