ASSAULT SENDS ONE TO HOSPITAL
Yesterday at 9:00 pm, officers were called to a downtown bar to investigate an assault. As a result of their investigation, police arrested Craig Witty, age 31 of 137 East Street and charged him with one count of Assault Causing Bodily Harm.
It is alleged that the accused punched the victim several times, knocking him to the ground and then began kicking him while he was on the ground. The victim, a 49-year-old male, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to hospital by ambulance.
The victim, who knew the accused, gave the police the suspect's name. He was then arrested a short time later at his residence. Craig Witty will be appearing in court today at 1:30 pm.
FENCE SET ON FIRE
The Sault Ste Marie Police and Fire Departments were called to 701 Pine Street for a fence fire. Youths were seen pouring a liquid onto a fence and then setting it on fire. Anyone witnessing this incident is asked to contact the Sault Ste Marie Police Service at 949-6300.
SUSPICIOUS MAN TAKES GIRLS' PICTURE
Yesterday at 4:00 pm, police received a call about a suspicious male. It was reported that the male was driving by two young girls when he stopped his car, got out and took two photos of them before driving off. The incident took place on South Market Street near Chambers Avenue.
The two girls did not know the man. He is described as male Caucasian in his 60's, with salt and pepper coloured hair and wearing a brown jacket. Anyone with information about the male is asked to call the Sault Ste Marie Police Service Investigative Unit at 949-6300.
BUS SHELTER DAMAGED
Sault Ste Marie City Transit reports that unknown person(s) damaged the bus shelter at the corner of Queen Street East and Spring Street yesterday. There was also a report of mischief to an apartment in the 600 block of Portage Lane yesterday.
STOP FOR SCHOOL CROSSING GUARDS
City police warn motorists to stop for school crossing guards when they are in the intersection with a stop sign raised. It is a serious offence to not stop and is very dangerous to the children and the guards.
