DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CALL
2 persons will appear in bail court this morning after police responded to a domestic violence call yesterday in the downtown area. It is alleged that a 43-year-old male and a 28-year-old female got into a fight in which the female threw a watch at the male causing a cut to open on his face, and that he grabbed her by the hair and burned her on the hand a number of times with a cigarette. The female was also on probation at the time of the offence. Both parties have been charged with one count of assault each, and the female faces an additional count of breach of probation.

OBSTRUCTING POLICE
Shortly before 3 am on Sunday, city police were called to the area of Wardlaw Fuels on Wellington Street West for an intoxicated male report. During the course of dealing with 2 males at this location, officers learned one of them was on probation with conditions not to drink.

Officers arrested Derek Spilman, age 21 of no fixed address, for intoxicated in a public place and breach of probation. While being taken into custody, the accused broke free from officers and started to run away but was quickly arrested and he started to resist arrest by struggling with the officers.

During this struggle, Mr.Spilman’s friend, one Emery Corbiere, age 23, of 34 Wellington Street West decided to interfere with the police who were attempting to handcuff Mr. Spilman. Mr. Corbiere was told repeatedly to stop interfering and he did not listen.

When first arrested Mr. Spilman gave a different name but during the struggle that followed Mr. Spilman’s identification fell out of his pocket.

Police arrested both males who both have court dates of September 27th. Mr. Spilman was been charged with one count of breach of probation, one count of obstructing police by providing a different name, and one count of resisting arrest in addition to being charged with being intoxicated in a public place. Mr. Corbiere has been charged with one count of obstructing police.

MAN CHARGED WITH CRIMINAL HARASSMENT
On the Friday, city police arrested a 49-year-old male for criminal harassment after his ex-girlfriend called City Police to report he was watching her. It is alleged that on the 20th and 21st of August the male repeatedly phoned the female, slept in her yard and sat outside her front window watching her. The male has been charged with one count of criminal harassment and one count of trespass by night. He will appear in court on September 27th.

DIDN’T PAY AT LIQUOR STORE
On Saturday, Martin Vine, age 24, of 772 Wellington Street East, decided he wanted a bottle of Polar Ice Vodka and went to the LCBO in the Station Mall to obtain the desired beverage. Once Mr. Vine selected the vodka, he hid the bottle under his jacket and left the store.

Staff at the LCBO apprehended Mr. Vine without incident and police were called. Mr. Vine was on probation at the time of the offence. He has been charged with one count of theft under $5,000 and one count of breach of probation. He will appear in court on September 27th.

BREAK & ENTERS
Over the weekend police received 2 calls about attempt break and enters. Yesterday, police were called to Etienne Brule School at 226 Queen Street East shortly after midnight where officers found an open window. Officers checked the building and it is believed entry was not gained. Also on Sunday, police went to the Roosevelt Bar at 306 Korah Road after someone attempted to pry open the doors. Once again entry was not gained.

BIKE RODEO ON TOMORROW
Just a reminder of the bike rodeo tomorrow afternoon at Rome’s: The Sault Ste Marie Police Service, Rome’s Independent Grocer and The Sault Ste Marie Safe Communities Partnership will be teaming up to hold a Bike Safety Rodeo and Bike Registration.

The event will occur in the Willow Street side of the parking lot at Rome’s and the rodeo is open to kids between the ages of 8 and 13 years of age. The event runs from 2 pm to 7 pm. In order to participate in the rodeo, all kids must have a helmet and must have a signed consent form from his/her parent or guardian. The consent forms will be available at the rodeo area.

If you fall outside of the age group for the rodeo, you can still attend and have your bicycle registered with the Sault Ste Marie Police Service if you live in the City.

There is no cost for registering your bike or to participate in the rodeo. By participating in either the rodeo or registration you can win a chance to win one of 3 helmets donated by Kids Safe Algoma and the Youth Subcommittee, which are both part of the Safe Communities Partnership.

Rome’s has arranged for the Kellogg’s company to donate a bike that can be won by a rodeo participant. Trained staff from the Algoma Health Unit will also be on hand to conduct helmet inspections and to show the youths of our community the proper way to wear their helmets.
