DRUG STORE ARRESTS MADE

Yesterday at approximately 5 pm, officers from the Investigation Services Section, assisted by patrol officers arrested 2 individuals for the robberies to the IDA Drugmart in the Station Mall and the PharmaPlus Drug Store in the Churchill Plaza that occurred within the last week. 33-year-old Tammy Maki of no fixed address was arrested for shoplifting from the Zellers Store on Great Northern Road. Officers found 2 knives in her possession. Further investigation resulted in Maki being charged with theft under $5,000, 2 counts of robbery and one count of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.

Also charged with 2 counts of robbery, one count of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public is 29-year-old Kimberly Grant McKenzie (male) also of no fixed abode. Both individuals will be appearing in bail court this morning. At this time the Sault Ste Marie Police Service would like to thank all of the members of the public who assisted in this investigation.

RIDE CHECKS OUT

37-year-old Laura Mercier of 111 Asquith Street will appear in court on July 19th, after she was charged with consuming alcohol over the legal limit. The accused was stopped last night shortly after 2 am during a RIDE check set up by the specialty unit dedicated to problem oriented policing. As mentioned earlier this week, this unit is continuing with Project Kick Start and will be completing more RIDE checks as part of their duties.

TWO AUTO ACCIDENTS YESTERDAY

City Police responded to 2 accidents with injuries yesterday. The first one occurred at 3:40 pm on Wellington St E at Nicholas Avenue when 2 cars collided. 20-year-old Michael Smykacz of 120 Palace Drive was charged with follow to close after his car struck the rear of a car driven by Clarence Gaborn of 56 Irwin Avenue. Mr. Smykacz was taken to the hospital by ambulance and treated for minor injuries. A passenger from the Gaborn vehicle, Shirley Gaborn, also received minor injuries.

Yesterday at 7 pm a van driven by 35-year-old Ariane Begley of 38 McNabb Street collided with a pickup truck driven by Devin Kendall, 25, of 304-536 Goulais Avenue. The accident occurred on Second Line West at Prentice after it is alleged that the Begley vehicle failed to yield to the traffic on Second Line West. Ms Begley was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with fail to yield to traffic on through highway. Ms Begley and one of her passengers received minor injuries. 23-year-old Amanda Molloy, a passenger in the pickup truck driven by Mr. Kendall was taken by ambulance to the hospital with minor injuries.
