Male Charged with 3 Counts of Assault
A 26-year old male will appear in bail court this morning on numerous charges laid in relation to a domestic assault call. City Police were called to a downtown residence shortly after midnight this morning regarding a male and female fighting. Upon speaking to the victim it was learned that from February 5th to 8th the accused assaulted his girlfriend on a number of occasions over those dates and the incidents included including throwing her against a wall, punching, kicking and hitting her, threatening to kill her, dragging her down the stairs, threatening to harm her with knives, and striking her in the face with a foot stool. The victim refused medical treatment for her injuries. When officers arrested the accused they found a steak knife inside his jacket. The accused has been charged with 3 counts of assault, one count of threatening to cause death or bodily harm, three counts of assault with a weapon, one count of aggravated assault, one count of mischief, and one count of possession of a weapon for purpose dangerous to public.
Domestic Dispute
Another male will also appear in bail court this morning in relation to a domestic call from last night. Last evening around 9 pm officers attended at a residence in the central area of town. It is alleged that a 30-year old male assaulted his girlfriend by punching her in the face. Officers seized a shotgun and a rifle from the residence, and the rifle did not have a trigger lock on it. The victim did not required medical treatment at the time of the call. The accused has been charged with one count of assault and one count of careless storage of a firearm, breach of the Firearms Act regulations.
Break and Enter
22-year old Thomas Fields of 84 Smale Street will appear in bail court this morning after police caught him trying to break into Blockbuster Video on Pim Street. Shortly after 3 am officers attended in the area after a call was received about banging noise coming from the area of the video store. When officers arrived they found the accused sitting at the door with a damage to the business directly above him and a crow bar and pry bar beside the accused. Entry was not gained. The accused has been charged with one count of attempt break and enter with intent and one count of possession of housebreaking tools.
Yesterdays Release:
Officers from the Fraud Unit arrested 18-year old Crystal McCormick of 60 Pozzebon Crescent yesterday. It is alleged that the accused took 15 blank Western Union cheques from her place of employment and between September and February did cause a number of financial institution to act on those money orders as if they were genuine. The theft involved did not exceed $5,000. The accused has been charged with one count of theft under $5,000 and 8 counts of uttering forged documents and will appear in court on March 7th.
Update for February 7th:
31-year old Gray Latvanen of 19 Anna Street will appear in bail court this morning. Mr. Latvanen was arrested for his involvement from an incident involving an arrest last week. It is alleged that the accused used a number of stolen money orders and cashed them in that had been given to him by Crystal McCormick. The Fraud Unit has charged Mr. Latvanen with one count of possession of stolen property, 5 counts of fraud under $5,000, 5 counts of uttering forged document and one count of breach of recognizance for failing to reside with his surety.
Third person charged-Feb 8th:
Yesterday morning officers from the Fraud Unit made another arrest in relation the incident involving Western Union cheques. It is alleged that the accused cashed 2 of the money orders between January 27th and January 30th. 24-year old Micky Buonomo of upstairs-280 Second Avenue has been charged with 2 counts of possession stolen property, two counts of fraud under $5,000, 2 counts of uttering forged documents and one count of breach of probation. He will appear in court on March 14th.
Alert Neighbours Assist
Alert neighbours assisted patrol officers in apprehending 2 youths on February 4th around 10 pm. A neighbour noticed 2 youths entering another neighbour’s car in the 200 block of Meadow Park Crescent and called police. Officers were able to find the youths hiding in the immediate area. The thieves had taken a 35 mm camera from the car, which was recovered from one of the accused. Both of the youths have been charged with one count of trespass by night, and one count of theft under $5,000. One of the youths faces an additional charge of possession of property obtained by crime. Both youths will appear in court on March 8th.
Update:
Last evening City Police charged one of the 16-year-old youths from the above incident with further charges. During the course of their investigation in the above call officers also found a stash of stolen property hidden behind a shed in the immediate area of where of the accused persons were arrested. The property included 2 cordless drills, a circular saw, a scroll saw and a mitre saw. The property was determined to have come from a garage in the 100 block of 60 Irwin Drive. Yesterday this youth was charged with one count of trespass by night, one count of theft under $5,000 and one count of possession or property obtained by crime. In relation to the most recent charge this youth has been charged with one count of break and enter and commit and one count of possession of property obtained by crime. The youth will appear in court on March 8th
Break and Enter
City Police received 2 reports of break and enters yesterday. A home in the 300 block of Pine Street was entered yesterday morning and electronic and alcohol were taken. Yesterday afternoon a home in the 100 block of Vera Avenue was entered and a computer and medications were taken.
Motor Vehicle Collisions
City Police responded to 5 motor vehicle collisions in the last 24-hour period. None resulted injuries or major damage. With yesterday snowfall the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would like to remind the public to again adjust their driving habits to the road conditions. In some areas of town the roads are slick.
