FUGITIVE APPREHENDED
A police standoff that lasted more than four hours outside a Shafer Avenue home last evening ended with the capture of Paul Jeffrey Whalen by heavily armed police.
Whalen was wanted on outstanding warrants for threatening, assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon. For details and photos, click on the "news & weather" page.
ARRESTED FOR MOLESTING YOUNG CHILDREN
Detectives from the Investigation Services Section of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service completed a sexual assault investigation yesterday with the arrest of a 44-year-old Sault Ste. Marie man.
It is alleged that on or between June 1, 2003 and July 12, 2003, the accused sexually assaulted both a 4 and 5-year-old female. Yesterday at 12:45 pm, the accused turned himself in to detectives. He will appear in bail court today.
CHARGED WITH BREAK & ENTER
Yesterday afternoon detectives arrested and charged John Decaire, age 34 of 137 East Street with Break and Enter to the Diplomat Hotel from an incident that occurred on May 23rd.
The investigation revealed that Decaire allegedly broke into a storeroom at the hotel and removed a small quantity of coins. The coins were subsequently recovered. Decaire will appear in court on August 18th.
BREAK & ENTERS
The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service was called to investigate several break-ins yesterday. At 7:30 am Officers were called to the old Soo Mill Store on Railroad Avenue where thieves had broken into a construction trailer.
At 11:40 am a homeowner on Chambers Avenue reported his shed was broken into.
At 2:00 pm staff from the Bush Plane Museum advised that sometime over the lunch hour thieves broke into the office and stole a quantity of cash.
