Male Charged with Mischief
Shortly before 5 am City Police responded to the Norwest Inn at 40 Hynes Street at the request of the Fire Department. A fire appears to have been started and put out by a 24-year old male. The male has been arrested and taken into custody and at this point has been charged with one count of mischief. The damage does not appear to have been extensive. City Police are still at the scene and the investigation into this matter is ongoing. Further information may be released later today pending further investigation.
Male To Appear In Bail Court
A 42-year old male will appear in bail court after being arrested yesterday afternoon in relation to a domestic dispute call in the downtown area. Officers attended at the address and found the accused and his girlfriend arguing. A police check of the accused revealed he was on probation as well as a release document with terms not to be with the female, and not to molest, harass or annoy the female. The male has been charged with one count of breach of probation and one count of breach of release orders.
Male Charged with Fraud
Yesterday afternoon officers from the Fraud Unit arrested a 23-year old male for a number of fraud related matters. It is alleged that back in the fall the accused purchased a parrot and a cage from Penny’s Pets with a value of over $2600.00 over the phone with a credit card. The bird was later delivered to the accused’s address on Queen Street East. It was later learned there was a problem with the credit card. Officers attended at the address of the accused yesterday and the bird was retrieved and returned to Penny’s Pets. Steven Kearns of 3-290 Queen Street East has been charged with one count of fraud, one count of stolen credit card data and one count of possession of property obtained by crime. He will appear in court on February 21st.
Break and Enter
City Police received one report of a break and enter yesterday. Thieves broke into a home in the 400 block of Northland Road overnight on the 17th. Items taken include a Tommy Hilfiger coat and hoodie, a white Chaps toque with blue stripes and a large quantity of cigarettes. This matter is still under investigation.
Motor Vechicle Collisions
Yesterday City Police responded to 16 motor vehicle collisions. One of the accidents occurred at Wellington Street East and Kohler Street. It is alleged that a car operated by Louanne King of 131 Poplar Avenue pulled out from Kohler Street and struck a pickup truck that was traveling eastbound on Wellington Street East. Brain Eldred of 23 Hardwood Drive was driving the truck. No one received any injuries and both vehicles received moderate damage. Mrs. King has been charged with one count of fail to yield to traffic on through highway contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.
Shortly before 6 pm last night officers attended at the intersection of Northern Avenue and Great Northern Road for an accident with injuries. It is alleged that a car operated by Pauline Cranston of 17 Nichol Avenue was traveling eastbound on Northern Avenue when she turned left onto Great Northern Road. Line Duguay of 325 Chambers Avenue was operating a car westbound on Northern Avenue when she struck the Cranston vehicle, which turned in front of her. A passenger in the Duguay vehicle was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries; 4 other persons in the Duguay vehicle received non-life threatening injuries that did not require any medical treatment at the time. Mrs. Cranston reported no injuries. Mrs. Cranston has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario with one count of left turn-fail to afford reasonable opportunity to avoid a collision. Mrs. Duguay has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario with one count of driving while under suspension.
