TORCH RUN THIS AFTERNOON

Starting a 4:30 pm today the public will see a number of the local law enforcement officers participating in the Annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, sponsored by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police. This year will mark the 18th anniversary of the Torch Run in Ontario. Last year 7,000 law enforcement runners from across the Province ran over 8,000 kilometres and raised over half a million dollars for Special Olympics.

This year, the run will start at 4:30 pm at the City Police Station, and the runners will travel down Great Northern Road, where they will stop at Rome’s in the Cambrian Mall to show thanks for the support provided. Runners will continue down Great Northern and the run will end at Western Automotive on 165 Queen St E around 5:30 pm. To help raise proceeds in support of Special Olympics, Torch Run t-shirts will be available for sale at the City Police Station at the Mobile Command Unit Vehicle between 4 pm and 4:30 pm and again at the Best Western Hotel at 229 Great Northern Road after 5:30 pm. The t-shirts are available for $20 the day of the run. Anyone wishing to make a donation other than buying a t-shirt can leave a message for the Co-coordinator Cst Fred Brown at 949-6300 ext 5224. All of the funds raised across the Province help provide a local year-round program of fitness, recreation and competition for Special Olympic athletes.

LCBO STORE HIT

Yesterday at approximately 4:30 pm the LCBO Store in the Station Mall was robbed. The male suspect demanded money from a cashier after advising he had a weapon, No weapon was observed by staff. The male left the store on foot and than hopped on a silver mountain bicycle. He is described as being in his mid 50’s, 5’8”, slim build, with grey hair and a dark complexion, and was wearing jeans, a light colored jacket and a “floppy” hat. The male made off with an undisclosed amount of money. The matter is currently under investigation by officers from the Investigation Service area of the City Police. YOUNG OFFENDER EYES BIKE

A 16-year-old young person will be bail court today after the youth was arrested early this morning when caught trying to steal a bicycle in the city’s west end. The youth was also on probation at the time of the offence, which included at 10 pm curfew. The young person was subsequently charged with attempt theft under $5,000 and 2 counts of breaching their probation.

B&E AT SIR JAMES DUNN

Yesterday morning Sir James Dunn School on Wellington St E reported a break and enter to the computer room. Thieves removed 4 central processing units. They are described as being Acer Veriton 5600G model computers, with 3 1/2 drives, CD drives as well as built in speakers. The monitors, mouse and keyboards were all left behind. If anyone has information regarding this break and enter, or knows the whereabouts of the property, they are asked to call the City Police at 949-6300 or Crime Stoppers at 942-7867.
