BIKE RODEO A SUCCESS
Last evening, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service Auxiliaries, along with the Brain Injury Association and in partnership with Rome's Independent Grocers held the second annual bicycle rodeo for children in the parking lot of Rome's Grocer Store on Great Northern Road.

Approximately twenty bicycle enthusiasts participated in the event, which featured a free helmet inspection from the staff of the Brain Injury Association and an obstacle/rules of the road course instructed by the Sault Ste. Marie Auxiliary Police Officers.

The participants had their names placed in a draw for two mountain bikes donated by Rome's Independent Grocers. The winners of the bicycles were two young females, Danielle Dupuis a student at Alex Muir School and Hayle Mills a student from St. Puis X School.


NABBED FOR DISQUALIFIED DRIVING
Yesterday at approximately 12:00 pm, Rui Augusto, age 28 of 242 Hudson Street, was found by patrol officers to be operating a 1993 Jeep on King Street.

The accused had just exited the courthouse on Queen Street where he had just been disqualified from driving for 12 months by order of a Provincial Judge, when he decided to drive his vehicle from the King Street parking lot to his friends residence.

As a result, the vehicle was stopped and Augusto was arrested and charged with Operating A Motor Vehicle While Disqualified. His vehicle was towed from the scene. He will appear in court on June 9th.


DOCTOR RIPPED OFF
On the afternoon of March 22, the victim, a doctor who was working at a clinic at the Sault Area Hospitals, noticed cash and a credit card missing from his jacket that he had left in his office.

Further investigation revealed that when the complainant noticed that the credit card was in fact stolen, he reported it missing to the Visa Centre. At the time of notification to the Visa Centre, the thief had already made one transaction at Four Seasons Collectible store in the Station Mall for a value of $172.00. The transaction occurred at 4:50 p.m.

Police officers commenced an investigation into the matter and determined that Richard Briere, age 44 of 325 Village Road in Blind River was allegedly responsible for the theft.

On May 7th at 12:24 pm, Briere surrendered himself to police at the Police Services Building, where he was arrested and charged with Theft of a Credit Card and Fraudulent use of it. He will appear in court on June 16th.


VEHICLE - PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT
At 10:22 am yesterday morning, police officers were called to motor vehicle/pedestrian collision on Bay Street at Bingham.

Investigation of the collision revealed that Geoffrey Bishop, age 42 of 135 Sutton Place, was driving a 2003 Ford vehicle southbound on Bingham Street and had stopped at the intersection of Bay Street.

Bishop proceeded to turn left onto Bay St. and struck a 62-year-old female, Shirley Ackland of 203-70 East Street. Ackland was walking west on the north sidewalk of Bay Street, crossing Bingham when she was struck.

Bishop advised Police that he failed to see the pedestrian. She was transported to Sault Area Hospitals by Ambulance and treated for minor injuries. Bishop has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act with Failing to Yield to a Pedestrian.


VAN - BICYCLE ACCIDENT
At 6:21 pm yesterday, police officers were called to a motor vehicle/bicycle collision on Pine Street in the 300 block. Dave Yule, age 37 of 537 Morrison Ave., was driving a 2001 Ford van northbound on Pine Street when a cyclist who was also northbound on Pine swerved out from the curb on the roadway.

The driver of the van tried to avoid the cyclist, but struck her with the mirror of the van. The collision occurred in the northbound lane. The cyclist, Susan Root, age 36 of 162 Trelawne Avenue was taken to the Sault Area Hospital by Ambulance with minor injuries. No charges were laid in this collision.


ERRATIC DRIVER CHARGED
At 1:23 am this morning, patrol officers observed a 2000 GMC pick-up truck being driven in an erratic manner in the Gore Street area.

The truck was observed going the wrong way on Albert Street and then it turned around and proceeded north on Gore Street. The truck then turned left onto Wellington Street West in an abrupt manner.

Police officers checked the vehicle at the intersection of Wellington Street West and North Street and found the driver, Cindy Morissette, age 24 of 404 Second Avenue, to have signs of alcohol impairment.

The driver was arrested and charged by police with Impaired Driving and Driving over .08. She will appear in court on June 9th.
