The City of Sault Ste. Marie has cancelled its annual Canada Day fireworks display, but if Saultites want to watch the Independence Day fireworks on July 4 coming from the Sault Ste. Marie Michigan side, there will be some rules to follow.
“As a border community, the city is asking citizens not to congregate on the downtown waterfront boardwalk to view the fireworks display celebrating Independence Day. Citizens are encouraged to find alternative locations to view the fireworks from a safe physical distance,” said spokesperson Tessa Vecchio.
“The city hopes to revisit its July 1 Canada Day fireworks display as part of its annual Culture Days celebration in the fall,” she said.
Enhanced security measures will be in place on July 1 and July 4 to avoid large crowds from gathering. The city asks that all residents to do what is best for our community and follow the advice of our public health officials.
“Gatherings of more than 10 people are still not allowed under the provincial restrictions,” said Dr. Loo, associate medical officer of health for Algoma Public Health. “As the COVID-19 virus is still circulating, the community needs to practice physical distancing at all times, especially with those outside your immediate household or mutually agreed upon social circle of 10. If physical distancing is a challenge, wear a face covering. If the majority of people wear masks in public, especially in spaces where they cannot physically distance, this can help lower risk of transmission at the community level.”
Dr. Loo advises tracking your close contacts by writing down the name, place, date and time. “This helps you remember your exposure risks and can help public health with contact tracing,” he said.
The city hopes people will still participate in decorating their homes with all things Canada. Photos can be submitted to the city’s Facebook page using #SaultCelebratesCanadaDay.
