The independent agency that looks into incidents involving police and civilians resulting in serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault in Ontario is providing more details on the allegations of sexual assault brought against Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.

According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), five investigations into allegations of sexual assault have been launched since December 2022.

A spokesperson for SIU informed SooToday via email Tuesday the investigations involve five different complainants bringing the allegations forward. The allegations involve two members of Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.

As previously reported by SooToday, two of those investigations have since been terminated. The SIU has since confirmed the pair of investigations were turfed due to a “lack of evidentiary information.”

“Every consideration will be made to re-open the case if the affected persons wish to come forward,” said SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette.

The remaining three investigations are ongoing, with two of the active investigations currently under review by the SIU director.

The SIU has jurisdiction over all municipal, regional and provincial police officers in Ontario, which includes 47 police services and approximately 23,618 officers.
