Colts capture senior girls basketball title

The senior girls high school basketball final came right down to the wire on Friday night at White Pines.

The Korah Colts won the title with a narrow 33-30 win over St. Mary’s.

Ava Engel paced the Colts offensively with eight points in the win while Mikayla Tremblay chipped in with seven.

Ella Zachary of St. Mary’s led all scorers in the game with 11 points.

Ashlyn Noble and Samantha Mazzuca chipped in with five points each for St. Mary’s in the game.

St. Mary’s, who went 4-5 in regular season action, earned a berth in the senior final thanks to a 55-36 semifinal win over Superior Heights.

Korah, who finished in top spot with an 8-1 record, picked up a 62-30 win over White Pines in the other senior semifinal on Tuesday night.

In the junior final, Kayla Viotto led all scorers with 15 points as St. Mary’s beat Korah 43-22 to pick up the junior title, handing the Colts their first loss of the season in the process.

Payton Magli added 12 points for the Knights in the win.

Elizabeth Burrows led Korah with seven points in the game.

Korah finished in top spot in the regular season with a 9-0 record. St. Mary’s finished second with a 6-3 record.

St. Mary’s advanced to the junior final thanks to a win over Superior Heights, while Korah beat White Pines.

Following the games, Emmalie Allard of Superior Heights was named the Referee’s Award win at the senior level.

St. Mary’s and Korah will represent Sault Ste. Marie at the AA/AAA Northern Ontario Secondary School Athletics (NOSSA) tournament, which is being held in North Bay beginning on Nov. 19, at both the junior and senior level.
