Sault product Brendan Perlini has inked a new NHL contract.

Perlini, who spent the 2020-21 hockey season playing in Switzerland with HC Ambri-Piotta, signed a one-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday morning.

The 6’3”, 210-pound forward scored nine goals and 16 points in 21 games in Switzerland last season.

Perlini, who played minor hockey locally prior to two seasons in the Detroit-area, had 239 games of NHL experience under his belt.

A first round pick of the Arizona Coyotes in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, Perlini got into 153 games with the club – scoring 33 goals and 24 assists – between 2016 and 2018.

Partway through the 2018-19 season, Perlini was dealt to the Chicago Blackhawks.

In Chicago, Perlini scored 12 goals and 15 points in 46 games to finish off the season.

In 2019-20, Perlini played in one game with the Blackhawks before being traded to the Detroit Red Wings.

In 39 games with Detroit, Perlini had one goal and four points.

On Friday, former Soo Greyhounds defenceman Darnell Nurse signed an eight-year contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers.

The contract, which carries with it an average annual value of $9.25 million, will kick in beginning with the 2022-23 season.

Nurse, who spent four seasons with the Greyhounds between 2011 and 2015, has played in over 400 games with the Oilers, including 56 during the 2020-21 season where he scored 16 goals and 36 points.

Nurse’s 16 goals last season were second among NHL defencemen.

Also on Friday, another former Greyhounds blueliner signed a new deal in Conor Timmins.

Timmins has inked a two-year deal with the Arizona Coyotes, who acquired him in a trade with the Colorado Avalanche last month.

Timmins assisted on seven goals in 31 games with the Avalanche during the 2020-21 season.

Meanwhile, former Soo Greyhounds forward Tim Gettinger signed a new contract with the New York Rangers on Friday.

A restricted free agent, Gettinger signed a one-year deal with the club.

Gettinger, 23, scored nine goals and 19 points in 23 games with the Rangers American Hockey League affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack in 2020-21.

Earlier this week, Sault native Blake Speers signed a one-year contract with the Arizona Coyotes.

Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Speers, 24, was acquired by the Coyotes in a trade with the New Jersey Devils in December 2019 that saw the team also acquire Taylor Hall.
