The Soo Thunderbirds were on the road for a home game on Wednesday night, facing the Soo (Mich.) Eagles at Pullar Stadium in the Michigan Sault in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action.
In typical Thunderbirds/Eagles fashion, the clubs played a one-goal game for the fourth time in six meetings on Wednesday with the Eagles picking up a 2-1 overtime victory.
Jack Mortson got the overtime winner for the Eagles on the power play in the extra frame.
Settled in the right faceoff circle, Mortson took a cross-ice pass from Dylan Bachalo and beat Thunderbirds netminder Noah Metivier high short side at 1:01 of the extra frame to give the Eagles the win.
Trailing by a goal entering the third period, the Eagles tied the game at 3:33 of the final period when Seth Ferguson jumped on a Thunderbirds turnover in the left faceoff circle and beat Metivier high stick side.
Cooper Foster had the lone goal for the Thunderbirds in the game.
A prospect of the Ontario Hockey League’s Ottawa 67’s, Foster scored his seventh goal of the season at 15:59 of the second period on the power play.
Foster scored on a rebound from the left faceoff circle after Brock Santa Maria’s initial shot from the right circle was stopped by Eagles goaltender Gabe Rosek.
Rosek made 35 saves for the Eagles while Metivier stopped 28 shots at the other end.
The two clubs are slated to meet again on Friday night, also at Pullar Stadium.
