Five unanswered goals lift Thunderbirds to victory

Cooper Foster had a goal and three assisted to lead the Thunderbirds to the win

Trailing by a goal early in the second period, the Soo Thunderbirds scored five unanswered goals en route to a 6-2 Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League victory over the Elliot Lake Red Wings Wednesday night at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

After Cole Kimble gave the Red Wings a 2-1 lead 64 seconds into the second period, Cooper Foster got the ball rolling for the Thunderbirds 1:32 later with a power play goal.

Michael Chaffay gave the Thunderbirds the lead for good with his fifth goal of the season with 2:58 to go in the middle frame.

Defenceman Andrew Gibson extended the Thunderbirds lead at 8:55 of the third and Tyson Doucette sealed the win for the Thunderbirds with a pair of power play goals 30 seconds apart.

Creo Solomon had the other goal for the Thunderbirds in the win.

Foster paced the Thunderbirds offensively with a goal and three assists while Gibson added a pair of assists in the win.

Brock Santa Maria also set up a par of goals for the Thunderbirds.

Soo goaltender Noah Metivier stopped 21 shots while Ryder Gregga made 23 saves for the Red Wings.

The Thunderbirds are slated to return to action on Saturday night against the Soo (Mich.) Eagles.
