Jacobs rink books playoff ticket in final Grand Slam event

The team currently sits 4-0 heading into the final day of round robin action

Brad Jacobs and his team from the Community First Curling Centre is rolling at the final Grand Slam of Curling event of the season.

Competing in the Champions Cup in Olds, Alta. this week, the Jacobs rink, which includes third Marc Kennedy, second E.J. Harnden, and lead Ryan Harnden, picked up a 6-2 win over Toronto’s John Epping on Thursday evening to move to 4-0 and clinch a playoff berth in the process.

It’s the final event for the team as Jacobs prepares to step away from competitive curling while the remaining members of the team are moving on to new teams next season.

Against Epping on Thursday, Jacobs got on the board with a pair in the first end with a daw and forced Epping to draw for one in the second end.

Jacobs proceeded to blank the third end before picking up a single in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.

After stealing one in the fifth to pull further ahead, Jacobs forced Epping to one in the sixth before sealing the win with a pair in the seventh.

The Jacobs rink can earn a bye into the semifinal with a win over Brad Gushue on Friday afternoon in their final round robin game.

Team Jacobs opened the six-day event on Tuesday with a 6-5 win over Karsten Sturmay in the opening draw.

Jacobs then picked up a pair of wins on Wednesday, beating Ryan Jacques 7-4 in the morning draw before beating Kevin Koe 8-7 in an extra end in the evening draw.

After round robin action wraps up on Friday, quarter-final games are set for Saturday afternoon with semifinal games set for Saturday evening.

The men’s and women’s finals are both scheduled for Sunday.
