It was a long time away, and the look was a little different with no fans in the stands, but the Lake Superior State men’s hockey team was back on the ice on Saturday for game action.
After the Western Collegiate Hockey Association regular season start was pushed back due to COVID-19, the Lakers hosted the Michigan Tech Huskies at Taffy Abel Arena Saturday in what turned into a low-scoring affair.
Both goaltenders in the contest were perfect as the schools skated to a 0-0 draw in the first game action for both schools.
The Lakers eventually picked up a shootout win thanks to goals by senior Yuki Miura and junior Ashton Calder.
Lakers senior goaltender Mareks Mitens stopped 25 shots and three more in overtime before stopping all three Michigan Tech shooters in the shootout.
Michigan Tech goaltender Mark Sinclair stopped 21 shots.
The two schools wrap up weekend action on Sunday in a 3:07 p.m. start at Taffy Abel Arena in the Michigan Sault.
